A Short WebQuest on Blogging

Introduction

Blogs are probably the most common and prolific example of Web 2.0. Essentially anyone can set up a blog and be publishing anything they want in a matter of minutes. This short WebQuest is going to give us a chance to really explore the significance of blogs and then examine ways you might integrate blogs into your curriculum.

Task

  1. Set up a Wordpress account and join
  2. Search and skim some blogs on topics of your choosing - sharing at least two blogs you find interesting.
  3. Examine educational blogs implemented in a K-12 classroom, classify their use, and develop ideas for personal implementation.

Process

Part 1 - Wordpress Account

  1. Go to Edublogs.org and set up an account. (You DO NOT need to set up a blog at this time, just make an account.)
  2. E-mail me at danmcdowell@gmail.com
  3. I will then add you to the Web2007 blog.

Part 2 - Example Blogs

Let's examine the blogosphere in all of its glory (both positive and negative!).  There are blogs on just about any topic - look around and see what you find!

  1. Visit one of the blog search sites below and search for blogs on a topic of your chosing (educational, sports, etc.).
  2. Review/skim at least four different blogs.
  3. Return to the  Web2007 blog and share two or three blogs you found interesting.  For each example, explain its topic and the particular perspective taken.  End your post by reflecting on what this all means.  How does this sort of technology change our perception of the web, information, etc.?

Part 3 - Educational Use

  1. So now here is the part where we can look at how blogs are actually being used in classrooms around the country (and probably the world).
  2. Review each of the following educational blogs. Using the provided handout, examine the blog has been utilized, including how the blog or blogs are set up, who is writing, where they are writing, topics being discussed, etc.
  3. Next, identify four or five types of educational blog applications.
  4. Finally, think about how you might use a blog in your classroom.  What might it look like?  What sort of assignment could you envision (imagine a tech genius by your side solving all your technical problems as you go).  Post your idea to the Web2007 blog.
